9 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Inspired by the possibilities of digital technology and the audacious rhythms of Brazil and Africa, Peter Gabriel invigorated pop music with 1986’s So. “Sledgehammer” is a James Brown groove reinforced with juicy synths and hard-hitting drum machines. While that song highlights Gabriel’s most soulful singing, his husky voice materializes like a beam of light through the roiling pulses of “Red Rain.” The dueling currents of tension and comfort merge on “In Your Eyes,” a love song so pure in its intentions that its intricate machinery becomes almost invisible.

Peter Gabriel is an alien from the future

& he’s brought back with him the style & sounds from whatever time he’s actually from

…at least thats the only reasoning i can come up with that explains why he’s so amazing & original & continues to be with each album he releases. Don’t Give Up is one of my favorite songs on this one.

Thirty Years Later - Still Great

I owned this CD back in the time it was big, and loved it. Recently I downloaded it here, and it is even better than I remembered. Absolutely no throw-aways, though "This Is The Picture (Excellent Birds)" is more of a poetic chant than a song. Long ago I skipped over some songs and just listended to the hits. That was a mistake. This is truly his musical masterpiece. "Mercy Street" was not released as a single but it is every bit as great as the hits - deeply haunting and beautiful. If you haven't heard the album in a while or if you've never heard it, highly recommended.

Great LP

I was working at an actual record store when this came out. I always played it loud on "store play". Red Rain rocked. Jeff B
