Album Review

Meaghan Smith makes her proper debut with The Cricket's Orchestra, a full-length album that incorporates all four songs from The Cricket's Quartet EP. Although it’s tempting to liken Smith’s songs to those found on Norah Jones' own jazz-pop debut, The Cricket’s Orchestra has its share of unique quirks, including flashes of hip-hop scratching and rich, eclectic production courtesy of Les Cooper. "If You Asked Me" has a big-band arrangement and a vibraphone solo, "Soft Touch" boasts an accordion and strings, and "You Got Out" is relaxed rockabilly in the manner of early k.d. lang. Many of the remaining songs find Smith playing the part of an acoustic singer/songwriter, with Cooper dialing down the production in order to highlight her vocals.

A Gem!

I first discovered Meaghan about a year ago on KCRW and have been following her ever since. The album does not dissapoint. She reminds me a bit of Norah Jones in that she has that laid back but captivating vibe that you can't stop listening too. I would name standout songs but really the whole album is solid.

Love it!

Finally some girl singers with upbeat happy songs! Her songs are so catchy with great beats that keep you in a great mood and put a wonderful spring in your step!

A Wonderful Old Fashion Sound!

I just downloaded this album yesterday! Meaghan has such an wonderful voice and her style of music has kind of an older sounding twist to it! It has such a classics sound like Michael Bubble! I absolutely love it! Hope she keeps making albums with the same kind of sound!

The daughter of a two musicians, Canadian singer/songwriter Meaghan Smith grew up listening to a variety of older genres of music -- jazz and swing chief among them -- as well as contemporary sounds, which helped fuel her own eclectic compositions. Her debut EP, 2008's The Cricket's Quartet, found the songwriter embracing everything from jazzy torch songs to elements of hip-hop, and she promoted the disc while touring alongside k.d. lang in 2009. That same year, she placed songs on the TV shows One...
