Album Review

Grand jazz master pianist and octogenarian Hank Jones is accompanied here by bassist George Mraz and drummer Dennis Mackrel. The program is a collection of jazz and pop standards that Jones has undoubtedly played countless times before, and it matters not a whit. His sense of refinement, elegance, and swing saturates the proceedings. Whether it's on the graceful cover of Al Foster's "Paulette" with its elongated spaces or on an uptown version of Monk's "Bemsha Swing," Jones is a supreme melodist. His readings of Ellington and Strayhorn here are beyond reverential and are journeys of subtle harmonic discovery (check out "Lotus Blossom"). The reading of Harold Mabern, Jr.'s "Grace of God (There but for the Grace of God)" is simply glorious. In a career full of winners, add this one to the list.

For My Father

After reading an article on Hank Jones in the Detroit Free Press, Sunday, July 30th, I had to have something by Mr. Jones. The article quoted Bill Charlap, pianist, on Hank Jones' influence, "His style is a profound and defined as any of the major masters. It's equal to Teddy Wilson, equal to Bill Evans, equal to Thelonious Monk, equal to Tommy Flanagan. It's as much a unique musical utterance and just as balanced in terms of intellectualism and feeling. With Hank Jones you hear the past, present and the future of jazz piano." I couldn't have said it any better. I loved the album.

Over the Top

This album is easily in my "desert island" list. It is so positive, gentle, swaying, relaxing....if I ever hve trouble sleeping, For My Father and the ole Bose in-ear headphones and I'm in heaven. And that doesn't mean it "puts you to sleep". It chases away any worries of the day and sleep then gets ya. What a musical family....Hank is the Big Brother to Thad and Elvin. Would have been so nice to have Elvin on drums on these sides before he passed.... God bless the Jones family and may Hank keep playin' for another 20!

Hank Jones For My Father

I love this recording but I do not remember which song inspired me to buy it, it just plays and I just listen.

The oldest of the Jones brothers, Hank Jones has been a supreme accompanist and underrated soloist. He's among the most accomplished sight readers in jazz, and his flexibility and sensitive style have kept him extremely busy cutting sessions and working in various groups and styles ranging from swing...
