Album Review

Frankie Ruiz's highly successful debut as a solo artist has attitude, fun, and Ruiz's joyful vocal skills to boot, although the overall sound still owes a great deal to the Tommy Olivencia sound (the majority of the recording personnel — sidemen, arrangers, and TH producer Julio César Delgado — work simultaneously with Olivencia). However, salsa would begin a new chapter with this recording, since the norm for romantic salsa would be reserved for vocalists alone, for better or worse. The hits include "Ahora Me Toca a Mi," "Esta Cobardía," "Tu Con El," "La Cura," and "Amor de un Momento"; these landmark tunes helped to usher in a new era in salsa, a commercially weakened genre at the time. ~ José A. Estévez Jr., Rovi

Review "Solista Pero No Solo"

This cd is, well, not to sound ridiculous, it's simply the best recording of the decade 80's. From start to finish, all 8 songs are in a class of their own. This recording which was released in cassette and album, was my first one ever. What a way to begin your collection heh?? "Ahora Me Toca A Mi", a classic, where Frankie tells the world is my turn....."Esta Cobardia" is a shy person's #1 song, it helps to motivate. "Como Le Gustan A Usted" is a hilarious song where Frankie just makes fun (In a good way) of old people. Powerful "Tu Con El" is a song that somehow you sing without realizing why... This song is so good that everywhere Frankie went, they would ask for it. Equally powerful is "La Cura", Frankie's #1 song and the one sought the most. These two songs were so good that different races around the world love them. A nice tune is "El Camionero" where he dedicating it to a truck driver in love. An excellent song is "Si Esa Mujer Me Dice Que Si", Frankie sings about if that woman says yes to me, I will marry her!! Nice tune, very creative. The one heard the least, overshadowed by the other monsters, is "Amor De Un Momento" which kind of brings him back to earth after flying high. It's a nice tune but more of a relaxed song with no extra hype to it. This cd is historical. It's the time when salsa was dethrone by Merengue and Frankie was able to keep it on top. Enjoy this no-words-to-explain-it cd!!!!!!!!

On August 9, 1998, Salsa lost one of its greatest singers, Frankie Ruiz, to liver failure, which according to various resources, resulted from complications of the AIDS virus. One of the first to perform in the Salsa Sensual style, Ruiz had played a major role in the resurgence of salsa's popularity in the '70s. A native of Patterson, NJ, Ruiz began singing at a very young age. He was still a child when he made his recording debut with Charlie Lopez y Su Orquesta. Moving, with his mother, to Puerto...
