iTunes Review

Decades after her first pop success, Suzanne Vega continues to revisit her back catalog, giving her songs the sympathetic interpretations that age allows. Stripped down (as her initial folkie impulses surely wished), the songs are finally intimate and simple, pointing up their lyrical wisdom and letting the melodies flow without lofty intrusion. She never sounded completely comfortable with the more artful productions, and now tunes such as “Undertow” (here, like many others, with modest strings), “My Favorite Plum,” and “Solitude Standing” are within her firm control. “Instant of the Hour After” is the album’s sole new original. A collaboration with Duncan Sheik from a theater piece based on Carson McCullers’s writings, it evokes the nighttime solitude of her best work with an undercurrent of speakeasy tension underscoring the lyric. “Blood Makes Noise” and “Solitaire” are the most animatedly arranged, with distorted guitars driving the desolate rhythm tracks. “Last Year’s Troubles” stands as the most upbeat tune here. There isn’t a false note sung throughout.

Love this!

How nice to hear an artist revisit their catalogue in a smart, stripped down manner. The last track is new and excellent as well.

How it should be

With Vega's subtle and sensitive vocal style and awesome lyrics, the over-production of some of these songs as released previously hid her true genius and feeling. This album is a breath of fresh air by a true master songwriter and performer. Buy it if you've ever been moved by her will be again.

Suzanne Vega was the first major figure in the bumper crop of female singer/songwriters who rose to prominence during the late '80s and '90s. Her hushed, restrained folk-pop and highly literate lyrics (inspired chiefly by Leonard Cohen, as well as Lou Reed and Bob Dylan) laid the initial musical groundwork for what later became the trademark sound of Lilith Fair (a tour on which she was a regular). Moreover, her left-field hit single "Luka" helped convince record companies that folk-styled singer/songwriters...
