Jason Crabb

Jason Crabb

As the scion of the much-loved Crabb Family, Jason Crabb grew up in public and won the hearts of Southern gospel fans with his precocious singing talent. It’s to his credit that he strives to forge his own identity in these tracks, rather than merely rely upon his family’s reputation to sustain interest. Though he didn’t write any of the material, Crabb chooses his tunes well here, applying his rough-edged voice to songs of personal struggle and redemption. “Somebody Like Me,” “One Day at a Time,” and “Sometimes I Cry” (the latter composed by his father Gerald) acknowledge weakness while reaching towards the Lord for strength. “Ellsworth,” featuring Vince Gill on background vocals, offers an especially poignant moment. Stylistically, the album shifts between classic Southern gospel (“Daystar”), folksy country (“Walk on Water”) and silken R&B (“No Love Lost”) while keeping its Christian content up-front. On “Worth It All” and “Hope for Me Yet,” Crabb musters up a down-home growl worthy of Third Day’s Mac Powell.
