Album Review

Like Memories, A Collection: Greatest Hits...and More was an odd compilation, not quite a hits set, though it gathered up the big hits not heard on the earlier record — "The Main Event/Fight," "Woman in Love," "Guilty," "What Kind of Fool" — since it also seemed to be a grab bag, including a few stray album tracks, recycling the two new songs from Memories (!), "Comin' in and Out of Your Life" and "Memory," and adding a couple of new recordings, "We're Not Makin' Love Anymore" (by Diane Warren and Michael Bolton) and "Someone That I Used to Love." The selection made no apparent sense, but then neither had Memories, and that album sold several million copies.

Greatest Artist Alive!!!!

I have listened to Barbra Streisand for over 25 years. She has the most amazing voice I have ever heard. The harmony in each note that she holds is phenominal. From her love songs to her duets and Christmas songs, she is the BEST!!! Will always enjoy her music!!

It's A Completer Set

This cd was scheduled to be a two disc set but was trimmed to one since the four disc box was assembled in 1988 and was languishing on a shelf awaiting it's release and a two disc anthology would have certainly hurt it's sales. Fortunately the box would wait until 1991 to see the light of day, the finished mastered result much better than it would have been had the set been released in the 80's. This leads me to the issue I have with this "digitally restored" project. Released in late 1989 the mastering should have been a lot better, instead this cd barely hits the "peak" levels and the end result is damned annoying. To summarize, it's too quiet. For the best versions, refer to each song's original album source, especially the brilliant remastered "Broadway" cd. "We're Not Makin' Love Anymore" was recorded especially for this collection and a video for this song was filmed, the lovely "Someone That I Used To Love" is also new to this collection and would have been a worthy addition to the "Essential" project released a few years ago. The included "hits" picks up where Barbra's second hits cd left off, although including a cut such as "Make No Mistake, He's Mine" or the single edit of "Left In The Dark" or the hit title track from her "Emotions" cd would have made this a more even collection, perhaps keeping the spooky "By The Way" from her 1974 lp "Lazy Afternoon" relegated to that album. For the true audiophile may I suggest the "Essential" collection? It is exactly what the title suggests.

Barbra Streisand's status as one of the most successful singers of her generation was remarkable not only because her popularity was achieved in the face of a dominant musical trend — rock & roll — which she did not follow, but also because she used her vocal skills as a mere stepping stone to other careers, as a stage and film actress and as a film director. Born in 1942 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she struggled briefly as an actress and nightclub singer in New York during...
