This debut release by Detroit-based quartet The Silent Years is the kind of album that could quickly become a heavy-rotation favorite for fans of dynamic and imaginative indie pop. Featuring loads of chiming guitars and irresistible power chords, the band emphasizes the basics and executes them well, filling their songs with memorable melodies, sharp hooks, and pleasing vocal harmonies. The production is layered, lush, and arty, but never goes overboard, so the loops and effects accentuate rather than overwhelm the songs. Rolling out one upbeat tune after another, including a couple of should-be radio hits (“Someone to Keep Us Warm,” “The Devil Wears Sunshine”) the band can both rock hard (“This Town”) and get quiet and moody (“Lost at Sea”), as lead singer Josh Epstein makes the most of his strong, clear voice and impressive Jeff Buckley-esque range. This is a smart, confident, and thoroughly enjoyable debut from a band to watch.
