A new name on the jazz scene at the time, Lindsey Muir made her recording debut on You're Nearer. She has a sweet voice and, although she mostly sticks closely to the melodies of the 11 vintage songs, her sincerity, phrasing, and sense of swing are winning. She is joined by a particularly strong group that includes the rhythm section of pianist Dave Berkman, bassist John Benitez, and drummer Winard Harper plus appearances from tenor saxophonist Don Braden, trumpeter Terell Stafford, and guitarist Mark Whitfield on various selections. While ten of the numbers are fairly familiar (although mostly not overplayed these days), this is the debut of "Is It Love You're After," which was composed by Lindsey's grandfather for her grandmother decades ago. Other highlights include "Something Happens to Me," "I Walk a Little Faster," "I'm Old Fashioned," and "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me." Lindsey Muir, the daughter of the founder of the Litchfield Jazz Festival, has potential and will hopefully improvise more extensively in the future.
Lindsey Muir "Hopeful Romantic"
"You're Nearer - Love Songs of the 30's & 40's" is a rare treat. It's unabashedly romantic tone transforms you. Lindsey's angelic voice and song choices sweep you off your feet and remind you of the power of true love. The world needs more of the sense of magic and wonder that Lindsey brings to these classic tunes. Backed by a stellar band that includes guitarist Mark Whitfield, Lindsey is as of yet unsigned but no doubt helped by the fact that she works for the Litchfield Jazz festival, a nationally known event sponsored in part by Downbeat Magazine and founded by her mother. She shouldn't remain an unknown quantity for long. People are starting to take notice and her ship is about to set sail. Buy your ticket now so you can say "I had a feeling about her from the very start". Oh by the way, the songs are great to sing along to. Trust me, I know.
What a treat
Finally a classy treatment of the lesser known songs of the big band era. This one's done in the combo jazz style and what a treat it is! Lindsey's voice is sweet and pure and floats right above. The arrangements are fresh and exciting and the solos go down smooth. Buy the CD right now!!! It has already taken the #1 spot on my iPod!
