iTunes Review

It wasn’t Mikel Jollett’s job as a music critic that inspired him to start making his own music so much as it was a grip of adversity; in one week his girlfriend dumped him, his mom found out she had cancer and he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that caused him spot baldness and skin depigmentation. The Airborne Toxic Event was born as Jollett’s cathartic vehicle. The quintet’s self-titled debut rocks with catchy song hooks and a commercial alternative radio familiarity that’s sure to hit home with fans of Joy Division, Interpol, The Strokes and Arcade fire – though opening cut “Wishing Well” has Jollett’s impassioned inflections sounding uncannily similar to Conor Oberst, replete with a quivering timbre and impressive literary lyrics. And it sounds again like there's a different singer on “Papillon” where Jollett downshifts from tenor to baritone with shaky Ian Curtis modulations. “Sometime Around Midnight” is a standout with lush strings leading into electric guitars and Jollett settling into his own unaffected voice.

This album rocks

If "Somewhere Around Midnight" does not get the hair on the back of your neck standing straight up and your blood boiling...check your pulse mate, you're already dead.

Airborne Toxic Event = One of my fav new bands!

These guys are great. Their style is new, unique and refreshing. Sometime Around Midnight is genius - It doesn't follow the typical pattern of verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus like 95% of songs... It flows effortlessly from beginning to end and envokes real emotion from the listener. All of the other songs on this album are fantastic also. Highly recommended!!

Unique and Even Better Live

I heard this band on Letterman when they performed "Sometime Around Midnight" and have been thankful to be an insomniac ever since. I immediately ordered their CD and told my best friend, who also fell in love with their sound. We just took a more than four hour road trip to see them live in Atlanta at a little place that did not even have a sign. It was worth every turnaround the Garmin gave us to get there and back. Trust me, if you get the opportunity, go see this band live: they sound awesome on the CD, but they are phenomenal in person. I can't wait to see them again.

Formed by novelist Mikel Jollett during a tumultuous period in his life, the Airborne Toxic Event (named after a section in American author Don DeLillo's novel White Noise) combine literate indie rock with real literary cred. Formed in 2006, the group initially took shape as a Los Angeles-based duo, with Jollett and drummer Daren Taylor serving as the only members. A roster expansion was eventually needed; as a result, classically trained violinist Anna Bulbrook was brought in to play viola and keyboards,...
