Mister Sam Presents the Bandana Splits

Mister Sam Presents the Bandana Splits

Just as the album cover suggests, this is a collection of retrofitted pop. It’s the work of Dawn Landes, Annie Nero, and Lauren Balthrop, accomplished artists in their own right, who come together to create a brilliant pastiche of Brill Building/Phil Spector pop. While the sound is technically a re-creation of a classic sound, the high caliber of the songs ensures it doesn't suffer from sterility. “Sometimes” bursts open with classic roller-rink organ and vocal harmonies that were performed live around a vintage RCA ribbon microphone. The songs recall the simplicity of rock ‘n’ roll’s earliest days. “Choo Choo” breaks into a playful bump. “Hawaiian Love Song” is a striking vocal piece, but it’s “You Don’t Have To Be a Baby To Cry” that throws in Hawaiian pedal steel. “All You Gotta Do Is Fall in Love” features drippy piano notes. “Hold On” throws in bossa nova. Put on The Bandana Splits, and everyone will think you’ve unearthed a lost treasure from a bygone era.
