iTunes Review

Jersey City’s Black Hollies wander through the history of rock ‘n’ roll with a love for its darkest, weirdest corners. “Unless It’s My Imagination” combines a Velvet Underground/“Sister Ray” rhythm and organ with Paisley Underground psychedelic shivers. The goofily titled “Benevolent Bacon” travels down the path of Mazzy Star but with a more demanding attitude that befits the band's Jersey roots. Chief songwriter Justin Angelo Morey shifted his songwriting approach for The Black Hollies' fourth album, which took three years to record under multiple conditions. The Spacemen 3–type slow drones enrich the turtle-like crawl of “Daydreams.” Keyboardist Joe Gonnelli provides an unlimited stream of vintage keyboard sounds to further place the music into a mid- to late-‘60s time warp, while the deliberately dirty production on the title track turns a beat-group “hey hey hey” romp into a song that sounds as if it'd been rescued from studio tapes lost in the vaults for decades. Not since the underrated U.K. ‘80s garage band The Prisoners has such a thick, powerful sound been reached in service to garage rock and its psychedelic counterparts. Excellent!

$4.99 for Bliss!?

How can you put a price on Rock Bliss??
I can't believe this fantastic, psychedelic album is just $4.99. I'll have to wait to see my receipt to really believe it's true.
The music reminds me of a heavier 'Strawberry Alarm Clock,' or a lighter, yet deeper, 'Iron Butterfly' with 'white Hollies' vocals veiled in the mix.
Powerful yet lovely. Takes me on a trip to better times ... Past, Future and NOW!

Psyched out

This album is a look through kaleidoscopic binoculars into the heart of psychedelia, and I can't look away. My room turned into a VW bus heading to Haight Ashbury circa 1968
with a stop-over in Manchester, U.K. 1989. Its a flying, time travelling VW bus. It's engine is a hookah and it's wheels are Black Hollies records.

The ultimate high

They say music has the power to transport any individual through time and space. This is exactly what the newest album from The Black Hollies, Somewhere Between Here and Nowhere, does. Listening to this album, you are reminded of what it would be like if The Yardbirds or Pink Floyd were still strumming their guitars and chanting through speakers. Each track delivers a groovy dynamism that compels you to tap your feet and envision a world of psychedelic colors. These imaginative songs wrap the listeners into a soft bundle of spiritual elation. Like the beginning of the track “When It’s Time to Come Down” the listener is immediately wedged between the light taps of the drum and the seductive guitar chords only to be slowly pushed to a dynamic crash of the drums and the humming of the bass guitar; yet, gently rocked by enchanting lyrics sung by the breathy voice of the band. One of the best tracks on the LP, “Lunatic Influenza Pt. II: Take Me As I Am,” really shows the charming magic and true prowess of The Black Hollies. Overall, Somewhere Between Here and Nowhere is a true kaleidoscopic masterpiece.
