Great change of pace

I have always been a fan of PC. From my college days, I remember him having EWF horns on his solo projects. This Love Songs CD shows a real side of Phil that many should learn about. He sings the ballads with lots of emotion and has top shelf backing players. I find the rehearsal takes especially good and may incorporate into my bands arr of some tunes. My favorite is If Leaving Me is Easy but I was blown away by The Way you look tonight. This is not a tune for just anyone to cover. It was written in the 1930s and should be left to real song crafters. Phil Collins makes that cut. I am impressed. I always give extra credit when real players show emotion on recordings. Most of these songs are worthy of many repeat plays. Enjoyable!!!

Against All Odds is Not the Original Version

Just a warning for any of you who are planning to download the "Against All Odds" track on it's own, or the entire album with getting that track in mind -- it's not the hit single, it is, I kid you not, an extended instrumental jazz version with no vocals. It's not bad, for an instrumental jazz song, but I was expecting the radio ballad. I feel like that was a waste of 99 cents, but it was only 99 cents, so I'll live. ;)

I also got "Separate Lives", which was great, as well as "Can't Stop Loving You", which I enjoyed a lot -- these were the radio versions, or at least close enough to my ear that that no differences jumped out at me. Another excellent track on here, though I didn't order because I have the original album it appeared on, is "One More Night", one of my favorite songs ever, from anyone. Well worth getting, assuming it isn't an instrumental jazz version of the song like "Against All Odds", of course. ;)

Phil Collins was a great singer, with a lot of good songs represented on the album, so I'd probably recommend it if you like that style of music -- but with the one important caveat that "Against All Odds" is not the same song that Phil Collins scored a hit with.
