Of the many, many recordings of Bach's Flute Sonatas (and I have been listening to most of them, for decades), this one emerges as somehow the most satisfying. Though incomplete (it does not contain those sonatas which add cello/gamba), those which appear here are performed with the most exquisite combination of style, tone, integration (with Karl Richter's extraordinary harpsichord accompaniement), and especially with Aurele Nicolet's wonderful articulation. You really owe it to yourself to hear this interpretation, this supple playing, this wonderful musical partnership.

Speaking as a flute player
I have listened to a number of different players all of my life. I was first introduced to Nicolet's talent at the 1999 New York City Flute Fair. Nicolet's tone is so clear, so free, so flowing. Prior to my introduction to Nicolet, I was a huge Galway fan. But I have to be honest, Galway's sound is very forced especially when compared to the freedom and lightness of Nicolet. Nicolet and this recording are superb. I just wish there were more recordings from Nicolet.
