Customer Reviews

As good as it gets!

Robert Barto has embarked on an ambitious task with (at the time of writing) some 7 volumes of the music of Weiss on Naxos. Weiss has enough music to keep Barto busy for several more years yet after purchasing vol.1 I immediately bought the rest. These are exemplary recordings and deserve a place in any music collection. The music itself is quite astonishing, full of depth and humour. Weiss, a contemporary of J.S. Bach was a virtuoso lutenist in his day and while his music is not as well known as that of his friend, it certainly stands on its own and deserves a wider audience. These discs by Barto more than do the music justice and are highly recommended!

Brilliant and Profound

Weiss was the court lutenist at Dresden. How good was he? He used to challenge (in a friendly way) his friend JS Bach to imrpovisation contests, lute vs. harpsichord! Robert Barto has justifiably made a name for himself as THE interpreter of the Weiss lute pieces. They are all uniformly excellent. You can actually watch Barto play some of these pieces on YouTube. Highest recommendation!
