Good, solid CD

This isn't breaking any barriers, but is filled with good, solid songs that are undeniably catchy and enjoyable. To paraphrase the beer commercial: it’s got listenability. Part of the appeal here is that this isn’t trying to be “alternative” or any such style. It’s not too heavy, it’s not too light. It’s just rock music the way rock music was intended.

The CD opens on a strong note with straightforward rocker “Only One in Town”, then rides a nice guitar riff through “Subway Girl”. The highlights of the CD are “Song Called Nora”, a fun, fast-paced affair, and “Denial”, a slower, powerful song that my CD player keeps finding its way to. There’s plenty of variety here as things go a little jazzy in “Center City”, a little punk-ish in a fast-paced remake of “Hungry Like the Wolf”, and a little I-don’t-know-what-you-call-it in “Handsome Party”.

All in all, this is a very solid album. Jake Laufer knows how to put together a good, accessible sound, achieving mass appeal without losing the musical quality.
