Editors’ Notes

Between May of 1957 and March of 1960, Miles Davis collaborated with the composer and arranger Gil Evans to create a trilogy of masterpieces for large jazz ensemble. Sketches of Spain, the last of the three, is a dazzling work, not only for the glowing, magisterial orchestrations, but for the stunning solo work by Davis, among his most expressive and affecting. The centerpiece of the album is a November 1959 recording of the adagio from “Concierto de Aranjuez,” a 20th century Spanish composition by Joaquin Rodrigo. “Will O’ the Wisp” comes from a Manuel de Falla ballet while “The Pan Piper” is based on a mystical Peruvian Indian folk melody. An adaptation of old Andalusian flamenco, “Saeta” is a religious march tune that quiets in the middle to allow Davis’ mournful, wailing horn the spotlight. This 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition adds a live performance of the "Concierto" (originally released in 1987) alongside a rehearsal and alternate takes from the original recording sessions, plus "The Maids of Cadiz" from Miles Ahead, and "Teo" from Someday My Prince Will Come.

Customer Reviews

One of a kind. Perfection. A MUST have for all fans of jazz or even just GREAT music. Great to listen to in bed! Beautiful. Love it!

this is an incredible album

It's funny that this is "new and noteworthy" since it's not new - check the release date. However, "Sketches of Spain" is certainly noteworthy. Miles Davis captured something on this album that transcends jazz. It plays like a film soundtrack, capturing a beautiful reflection of an intimate setting. Listen to it from beginning to end at least three times without prejudice to let its full production show you what it can bring. Every time I listen to this album it brings something new to mind.

One of the Greatest Jazz Albums

This is an extraordinary album. Absolutely fabulous. If you love jazz, you know it, own it, and love it. If you are interested in jazz, it is one of 10 albums that'll get you hooked. Unlike a lot of Miles Davis' music, it is absolutely accessible if jazz is new to you.

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz from the mid-'40s to the early '90s, since he was in the thick of almost every important innovation and stylistic development in the...
