This Song Book is a Page Turner!

Kenny Garrett is a young master of the alto saxophone and every style in the Jazz idiom. He swings hard and never lets up.This album also has Kenny Kirkland, another young master of his instrument who died all too soon but fortunately there is a musical record of his craftsmanship. This CD is one fine example of his garganuan talent. "Listen to Kenny Kirkland's killer solo on "Wooden", a tribute to Woody Shaw. It can be described in one word - awesome. "Sing a Song of Song" is beautiful piece with an Oriental feel. It is a celebration of music. It conjures up thoughts of a happy village in the midst of a celebration. Garrett wrenches every piece of emotion out of it by the end of the piece. "Brother Hubbard" is a tribute to the late great trumpet virtuoso, Freddie Hubbard. Freddie's essence is captured with this soulful grove piece. This is an excellent set from an excellent band. Buy this CD immediately if not sooner!!!

My Favorite Jazz Album!

For years Kenny Garrett's Sing a Song of Song has been one of my favorite songs. After buying the entire album, I am so upset that I didn't buy it earlier. This CD captures all of the unbelievable talent of Kenny Garrett. Each song is better and more emotional than the last. This is my favorite jazz album.

Incredible - My Favorite Record of the 90's

Every track on this record is a gem, not only because of Garrett's mesmerizing playing, but also because of his marvelous band (Kenny Kirkland - piano, Nat Reeves - bass, Jeff "Tain" Watts - drums) and the spotlight on Garrett's amazing compositions.

Kenny always seems to have one foot in the straight-ahead jazz camp and another in "commercial" territory--his songwriting is the ideal balance of catchy, singable work, and music that challenges the listener just enough to keep him listening.

Anyone looking for jazz that aims for your heart, rather than your brain, ought to check out this record. I also recommend "Happy People."

Although saxophonist, bandleader, and composer Kenny Garrett never had the benefit of a college education, that hasn't hurt his career as a jazz musician one bit.
