Album Review

Some of the last songs written and recorded by Woody Guthrie were his children's songs. Their strength, shown in Songs to Grow on for Mother and Child, is an unusually strong identification with actually being a child, in all its simplicity and charm, along with the ability to win over listeners. Good examples here are "Rattle My Rattle" and "I Want My Milk." Guthrie is an acquired sonic taste worth acquiring. Ages 3-5. ~ William Ruhlmann & Bob Hinkle, Rovi

What ITunes Reviewer Said

I agree with all that the reviewer said, but I think that what separates this album from other children's albums is how Guthrie gets inside the almost stoned-like state of childhood. Everything is wonder and discovery. Sounds become more important than what is being said, and for Guthrie this is a big thing as his songs for adults are all about issuing forth new understanding of the world and the strange beast that tries to dominate it.

Classic

Simple, honest, genuine, loving, fun.

Best children's CD

My son has loved music since birth. Now that he approaching 2, and he make requests this has turned into his favorite CD. The songs are simple enough that he can "sing" along, repetitive enough to be catchy, but not annoying. You get a sense that Guthurie really loved, played with, and understood his children. The songs are sincere and always a joy to listen to with my toddler because it makes him so happy.

Woody Guthrie was the most important American folk music artist of the first half of the 20th century, in part because he turned out to be such a major influence on the popular music of the second half of the 20th century, a period when he himself was largely inactive. His greatest significance lies in his songwriting, beginning with the standard "This Land Is Your Land" and including such much-covered works as "Deportee," "Do Re Mi," "Grand Coulee Dam," "Hard, Ain't It Hard," "Hard Travelin'," "I...
