“I thought I was Dylan / I am only a waiter,” sings Parker Longbough at the end of “Think On Your Own.” The Anchorage, Alaska songwriter low-balls himself considerably. Dylan’s a tough mark to match, but Longbough has more than a few likable attributes as another songwriter in the ‘beautiful loser’ sweepstakes. Longbough’s tales of heartache and woe are pretty much the common experience — though “Brodawg Deal” mimics childish petulance a little too perfectly — but his desperate, nasal delivery adds an extra gravitas that plays perfectly against his small band’s crusty, country-dipped indie rock. “Further Forward” crashes through like David Lowery’s Cracker filtered through a fuzz-pedal, while the double-tracked vocals of “Swimming In My Mind” recall Beck at his most spaced and despondent. The sound is raw and real. The guitar neck squeaks as hands slide up and down in search of the next chord. It creates a palpable buzz. Nothing like ringside seats to make you feel like you’re part of the action.
