Album Review

Power pop is a genre that never seems to go out of style. Ever since the Beatles invented it back in the 1960s, each subsequent decade has spawned countless bands that specialize in tunes that walk the line between sticky sweet pop and good old-fashioned rock & roll. As evidenced by their 2008 release, Not Only...But Also, a leading candidate for the "early 21st century power pop award" is the Los Angeles, CA based trio, the 88. The group's third full-length overall (but first for major-label Island Records) was produced by a pair of gentlemen who have scored their fair share of hits over the years — Babyface and Matt Wallace (the latter best known for his groundbreaking work with the great Faith No More). And while the majority of the album is quite upbeat (especially such jolly ditties as "Coming Home" and the album opening "Go Go Go"), there are a few detours into melancholy ("No One Here," "Save Your Breath") that momentarily break up all the sunshine. Pop music of the early 21st century is largely comprised of youngsters who seem satisfied with their mere 15 minutes of fame, but with Not Only...But Also, the 88 have put together a consistent pop album from front to back.

Brilliant Rock/Pop Record!

Attention lovers of Superdrag, Fountains of Wayne & excellent rock/pop records everywhere, this stick-in-your-head album will not disappoint! "Love You Anytime" absolutely rocks & brilliantly describes the serious complications of deep relationships (the outro is amazing!)... "No One Here" is simply the best love song I've heard since "Secret Garden." It rips my heart out in that feels-good-way every time. "Coming Home" is as close to a perfect pop song as you'll ever get. The 88 are the real deal. The rock production, musicianship & song-singability are incredible. "Not Only... But Also" is now on permanent rotation in my car... Need a true rock record that is both fun & meaningful that can restore your faith in today's music scene? Here you go, go, go...

Formed: Calabasas, CA

Years Active: '00s

The 88 are a pop band from southern California that blend British Invasion melodies with a subtle but potent instrumental approach that recalls David Bowie and other '70s rock icons. Pianist Adam Merrin and guitarist Keith Slettedahl first met when they were both high school students in Calabasas, CA; sharing similar musical tastes, the two started recording tunes together during their senior year, and after graduating they formed a band called the Freeloaders. With the arrival of guitarist Brandon...
