Editors’ Notes

With Scud Mountan Boys, Chappaquiddick Skyline and Pernice Brothers, singer-songwriter Joe Pernice has always informed his music with a literary eye to accompany his sweet, soulful country-rock. It Feels So Good When I Stop is the accompanying soundtrack to Pernice’s novel, The Young Accuser, about a young man’s coming of age as the occasional leader of a fictitious band whose life is lived out by the soundtrack in his mind, brought to brilliant life by Pernice’s own sympathetic renditions. Del Shannon’s “I Go to Pieces,” Sammy Johns’ ‘70s hit “Chevy Van,” Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn’s “I’m Your Puppet,” Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” Todd Rundgren’s “Hello It’s Me,” and Boston contemporaries such as the Dream Syndicate (“Tell Me When It’s Over”) and Sebadoh (“Soul and Fire”) come together as one flowing, unpretentious collection of love songs, complete with brief spoken-word narratives pulling the errant strands together. Pernice is that rare performer who can pull off his grand ambitions with even greater modesty.

Customer Reviews

First off... Chevy Van is Soul and Fire, and Soul and Fire is Chevy Van

So... buyer beware... if you're looking to buy the hip, slick and cool cover of Sammy Johns' 1975 classic pop hit, you have to buy Soul and Fire... until iTunes figures it out. That being said, I worship the ground the Pernice's walk on, and I'd be hard pressed to say anything bad about any of their discs. On first listen, I'm a happy camper. But I have some editing to do for future listens :)

great record

just a note though... dream syndicate were an LA band (they just had a song called Boston)

Great songwriting with one of the best voices there is

The novel gets spanked by the critics but he can still write simple songs like no one else, and one of my fav voices ever.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Joe Pernice is one of the most interesting figures to emerge from the American indie pop scene since the 1990s; while he first gained recognition as part of the downbeat alt-country act the Scud Mountain Boys, since then he's performed and recorded with a variety of projects that have shown him to be a master of smart, beautifully crafted pop songs with intelligent, introspective lyrics and a darkly witty undertow that dovetails with his superb melodic sense. Born and raised in Massachusetts to a...
