Editors’ Notes

Released in 1980, Los Angeles, the debut album from the Southern California punk band X, stretches beyond the limitations of the punk scene to deliver one of the most emotionally powerful performances ever captured on tape. The Doors’ keyboardist Ray Manzarek produced the sessions by hanging back and ensuring that the magic of the group’s live energy was left to speak for itself. From the haunting, off-kilter harmonies of Exene Cervenka and John Doe and the splintered poetry that follows junkies and socialites alike through the Hollywood glitz, to guitarist Billy Zoom’s Chuck Berry-inspired manic riffing and drummer D.J. Bonebrake’s peerless tempo shifts, Los Angeles is one of rock music’s most enduring debut albums. The junkie violence behind “Johny Hit and Run Paulene” and “Sugarlight,” the sneering moral collapse of the title track and “Sex and Dying In High Society,” the steamroller cover of the Doors’ “Soul Kitchen” and the dance in the face of the apocalypse of “The World’s a Mess; It’s In My Kiss” all combine to make a flawless statement that never forgets how to rock. Quite simply: a masterpiece.

Customer Reviews

Rock and Roll Perfection.

Yes, this is the "X" from Los Angeles, not the "X" from Japan, or the "X" from Australia. I have always had trouble understanding why the "punk rock purists" of the world dispise this band so much. Is it because of the talent displayed by the musicians? is it because they were really hyped in their prime? Is it because the "X" from Australia is better? It's all a load of garbage! X is brilliant, enough said. The songs are tough and loud and catchy. The lyrics emotional and dangerous. Buy this, their first LP, Wild Gift, and Under the Big Black Sun. You won't be sorry.

It's about time itunes got this slice of awesomeness!!

Not only is this one of the best punk albums ever, it's one of the best rock and roll albums ever. I love Exene so much I named my rottweiler after her. Does that make me cool or lame? I'm not sure.

Punk Rock Classic

Many people will be surprised to find out that Ray Manzarek of The Doors produced this album. "Los Angeles" is an absolute punk classic and the Chuck Berry influence is undeniable in "Johnny Hit and Run Paulene". If you're a fan of Punk Rock your collection is not complete without this album.

X were far from the first punk rock band in Los Angeles, and they weren't the first to achieve some level of nationwide recognition, but in a very real way, they were the ones who put the L.A. punk scene on the map. X were the first L.A. punk band to be taken seriously by the rock press on both coasts, and at a time when many wondered how punk could thrive in the land of all that was mellow, X played music that was as raw, passionate, and powerful as anything coming out of New York, London, or any...
