Editors’ Notes

Throughout his lengthy and prolific career, Cal Tjader had one foot firmly planted in Latin rhythms. But the vibraphonist came up in the Bay Area's cool jazz scene, and even on this hip-shaking album, he and his sidemen keep things frosty. Alongside percolating Latin jazz standards like Dizzy Gillespie's "Soul Sauce (Guachi Guaro)" and Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue” are chill-ready late-night ballads like "Somewhere in the Night" and "Spring Is Here.” Mellow bossa nova groove "Joao" strikes a perfectly stylish balance.

Tasty and Low Fat

I cut my musical teeth on gems like this. Most tunes on this album deserve a 10 out of 10 rating. The entire album is truly "Soul Lifting" IMHO. So much for the tongue in cheek stuff. Mr. Tjader has a certain way with his music, particularly the vibes. You can feel his love and devotion come to life in his music. Classy and Classic all the way. Now sit back, relax (or dance) and enjoy Cal Tjader, one of lifes pleasures. Umm..

Soul Sauce

This album is as fresh and excitingl as the first time I heard it when it was originally released. Afro Blue was played and recorded by Coltrane and many others but Tjader's version still sends chills down my spine. Guachi Guara was a piece I choreographed my dancing to back in Miami Beach's first heyday. It was so much more interesting to dance to than anything I had heard at that time. Tjader's instrument gives a clean chrispy element to the usually heavier arrangement of latin rhythmic music and I never get tired of listening to it.

Song, "Soul Sauce" is Awesome!

One of my favorite songs is "Soul Sauce." Jazzy. Funky. Melodic. Whistle along with it! Can't write more, I'm bouncing around too much.

Cal Tjader was undoubtedly the most famous non-Latino leader of Latin jazz bands, an extraordinary distinction. From the 1950s until his death, he was practically the point man between the worlds of Latin jazz and mainstream bop; his light, rhythmic, joyous vibraphone manner could comfortably embrace both styles. His numerous recordings for Fantasy and Verve and long-standing presence in the San Francisco Bay Area eventually had a profound influence upon Carlos Santana, and thus Latin rock. He also...
