Album Review

Former Different World actress and Lenny Kravitz musical protégé, Cree Summer addresses both her Canadian Indian roots and her oneness with earth (covering both the personal and universal obligations of her singer-songwriter role) on her debut album, Street Faerie. But even with those foregone topics in place, it all comes off sounding a little too much like hippie-dazed philosophizing caked in neo-psychedelic rhetoric. Producer Kravitz keeps his usual retrogazing to a minimum here, allowing Street Faerie to breathe in its own organic surroundings and to develop a style more reserved than on any of his own recordings. Summer herself ably blends R&B and alt-rock, yet the album excels in neither, eventually leaving its author, and the listener, to walk away with an indifferent shrug.

Good '99 Album

I don't know what the iTunes reviewer is talking about. This is a good album with clever, poetic lyrics. Cree has a unique and powerful voice. It is both feel-good and thought-provoking music. Lenny Kravitz brings his skills to the table and Van Hunt co-writes a few songs with Cree--this is an intimate project. Let's keep in mind that this is music. It's meant to be listened to and appreciated over time, not just listened to once just so you can draw a half-baked opinion about it. Live it, breathe it, and get to know it before you judge.

Best triple threat debut bar none

I truly love this album. I can't believe this album was not bigger, but I suppose many of the classics are not. This album is a thoughtful, timeless collection. I can't think of many artists with a debut this great. I'm almost glad she hasn't done anything else. As a single statement, it speaks for itself.

This album is still in my "heavy rotation."

I got this album in 1999 and can still listen to it like it is the first time. "Deliciously Down" and "Soul Sister" are some awesome cuts. I just wish she would have had a second album. You will not be disappointed with this album. It is a classic!
