iTunes Review

From Rikers Island prison guard to queen of the throwback soul-funk scene, Sharon Jones has been singing for her entire life. She got her big break in the mid-'90s by collaborating with The Soul Providers, a group that eventually morphed into The Dap-Kings. After several much-loved 7-inches, they dropped Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings in 2002, and the rest is history. With their righteously funky sound, they enamored fans around the globe, transcending language, race, and age differences thorough the power of good music. Soul Time! is their fifth album together, and it continues their tradition of ultra-soulful jams that transport you back to a simpler time when real singing and musical chops actually mattered. While nothing compares to the raw power of their live performances, this is the next best thing. Every song here is great, bubbling with tight horn arrangements, gritty drums, roughneck guitar lines, and smooth organ vamps backing up Jones' timeless vocals. Check out "When I Come Home," "Inspiration Information," and "What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?"

Great Collection of bonus material

Just to clear things up for folks-- this release is a collection of B-sides and bonus tracks that span Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings' career so far. Genuine is from an early 7" record, thus the gap between part 1 and part 2. Highlight track, in my mind, is "I'm Not Gonna Cry," which was originally released on the Daptone Gold compilation. Also don't miss "Settling In, which was a bonus track. Both sound like they're from the 100 Days, 100 Nights sessions. "New Shoes" seems to be the only track I haven't heard before-- not sure where it came from, but I'm loving it! Also check out "Inspiration Information"-- a cover of one of my favorite Shuggie Otis songs.

All in all, a nice collection of odds and ends. If you're a vinyl junkie like me, you might have heard some of these tracks before. But for the more casual fan, there'll be some nice new discoveries here!

Astounding! This is SOUL!!!

This is a must have CD, it was put 2gether nicely & I encourage anyone who wants 2 hear music for your soul to buy this. I could care less if these songs were already released as B-sides on vinyl, they did an outstanding job of selecting the best songs to represent the group, that people who don't buy vinyl can enjoy. I still buy vinyl but I can't get everything & I appreciate the label & or group 4 releasing this collection. I cannot pick a favorite song I just put it on, let it play & let it repeat, Sharon & The Kings are that amazing. For any1 that loves James Brown, Lyn Collins, Betty Davis, or Al Green, this CD is 4 u. If u're still unsure preview these songs I'm sure u'll make up ur mind "Genuine pts 1&2," "He Said I Can," or "What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes." Peace, Love & oh yes Soul (Time)!

A disapointed fan

Is this just a compilations of demos, or a rushed effort? Either way, it is sadly lacking.

By the sound of them, you would think Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings started making funk-threaded soul music together in the 1960s. Few devotedly retro acts are as convincing. Few singers as skilled as Sharon Jones at stuffing notes with ache and meaning would be willing to invest in a sound so fully occupied by the likes of Bettye LaVette and Tina Turner in the Ike years, too. But what Jones brings to the funkified table has legs of its own -- eight of them, to be exact -- and they belong to Binky...
