Album Review

Why mess with a good thing? Sound in Time is another spare but striking release from Lungfish. While it falls in the same vein as the rest of the band's ever-growing catalog, the minimalist sound and probing lyrics are how Lungfish helped pioneer the post-hardcore movement. Riff after riff, beat after beat, the rock-solid foundation is laid for Daniel Higgs' mysterious, emotive lyrics. Somehow, Sound in Time is profound and accessible all at once, something very few albums ever accomplish, but something Lungfish accomplishes time and time again.

nothing like lungfish

lungfish's genius isn't that it uses repetition to enhance the evocative lyrics, it's that it writes hooks so incredibly raw and catchy that you don't *want* them to do anything else in the song; To Whom You Were Born, Jonah, X-ray the Pahroah, Sphere of Influence and The Cipher being notable and worthy examples.

a powerful, massive record.

turning more inward, this record shows lungfish truly coming into their own. the monastic repitition grows slower, heavier, darker, more internal. a point of departure from their earlier, driving work, this album maintains their intensity, creating a heavy atmosphere that is dark, beautiful, thick and lush. human beyond belief, this record will change you if you let it.

This is an amazing record - Lungfish's best - and one of my favorite records ever. Flawless from start to finish. What this band does is hard to describe, but I remember that one review of this record called it a "stone carved monolith" - which is a pretty good description. Its heavy without sounding hokey, melodic without being pop, lyrical without sounding like storytime. All the regular band members are on top of their game, and the addition of Sean Meadows' roving, melodic basslines adds the "X-factor" that pushes this one over the edge into classic territory. Buy this record. If you don't get goosebumps from the first two songs, you probably like Pink.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Formed in Baltimore, MD, way back in 1988, Lungfish is one of the longest surviving emo bands. Signed to D.C.'s Dischord, Lungfish's highly intense, minimalist yet complex music has been called everything from Taoistic to stoic. Singer and lyricist Daniel Higgs bares his soul with each profound album and is so driven to write that he published an entire book of poems, The Doomsday Bonnet. The band, which also includes Asa Osborne (guitar), Nathan Bell (bass), and Mitchell Feldstein...
