Album Review

A Soundtrack for the Wheel of Time is the creation of Robert Berry (Three). It is a soundtrack album created not for a film or television show, but rather to accompany a series of books. The fantasy books are written by Robert Jordan, who has officially endorsed this album. Berry hooked up with several artists to do the album. They include Lief Sorbye (Tempest, Caliban), Andy Frazier, Lisa Bouchelle (Mastermind), and Michael Mullen (formerly of both Tempest and Caliban). Since two of those musicians are from Tempest, a Celtic rock band that Berry has long been associated with, it should come as no surprise that much of the music has a strong Celtic texture. There are certainly other things going on here as well, though. Chief among the sounds that show up are leanings toward the music of such artists as the Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, and Tangerine Dream. The majority of the disc, as one would expect from a soundtrack, is instrumental. The album should succeed at what it is intended to be, a soundtrack to use as music while reading the books.

Misses the mark...

The compositions in and of themselves are decent, but the arrangements are oversynthesized. I feel like I am back in the 80's playing old style video games. In addition, most of the tracks sound very similar to one another and do not evoke the strong emotion one would expect based on reading the books. Overall I am glad that there is a musical interpretation of things from the series, but I feel that there is something lacking. It would have more power if the arrangements were orchestrated instead of synthesized. Still, if you are a fan of the books, it is not a bad body of work to add to your collection.

Unimpressed

It's not bad, but I've found that I like listening to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack more than this while reading WoT books. Guitar use seems a little off, and I think classical has a more appropriate feel for the era in which the books are set.

Amazing...

If you've ever read the Wheel of Time Series, you should get this album. It takes you right back to your favorite moments in the series. Plus, the character themes truly describe the character. A must buy...
