iTunes Review

The first thing everyone seems to share about Nicolas Jaar is his age. Which is understandable; while 19-year-old rock stars don’t seem all that strange, 19-year-old producers are a reason to rejoice in the world of heady dance music. Well, maybe dance music isn’t the right designation here. Unlike some of the buzz-stirring remixes and singles that dropped before Jaar’s debut LP, Space Is Only Noise is more of a living-room listen — a volatile balancing act between the closely linked forces of downtempo, house, jazz, and pop music. Jaar’s version of pop, that is, which has more in common with the twilight-zone tracks of Matthew Dear — another house/techno producer with singer/songwriter tendencies  — than anyone who’s climbed the charts in recent years. Aesthetic parallels aside, Jaar is on his own plane, delivering a full-length that feels like a series of striking snapshots. Not to mention a preview of what’s to come from this point on, whether that means something as immediately satisfying as the smoke ring soul of “I Got a Woman” or a record that rewards repeat listens like the synth-scraped title track.

Very different... In a good way

Hard to describe how an artist can make an album with the ingredients of dance music, but does it in a way that doesn't sound like dance music. There are many genres mixed together here, but done so well it's not a hot-mess of someone trying too hard to make something unique. And for an album that clocks in at around 45 mins, it goes by effortlessly because of how seamless all the tracks fit together. Well done Señor Jaar.

Start Of A New Decade!!

This is truly an amazing work of art. This album is like a film...Amazing work and something people will speak about for years to come!!! YARCHY Indeed.

Pat Yourself on the back Mr. Jaar

In my opinion, Nicolas Jaar has proven himself a master of using space to portray a particular feeling. This music doesn't really fit in nicely with a genre, which I feel is a good thing. Very original.

Biography

Born: January 10, 1990 in New York

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Nicolas Jaar, one of the least predictable and most experimental dance music producers of the late 2000s and early 2010s, was born in New York but spent much of his early childhood in Santiago de Chile — the birthplace of his father, Alfredo Jaar, an artist and filmmaker — until he moved back to New York before his teens. In 2004, while under the spell of Ethiopian jazz and Erik Satie, Jaar began to feel his way through music production and made something of a breakthrough after his father...
