Album Review

Dream Theater and ex-Alice Cooper keyboardist Derek Sherinian grabs the spotlight with Planet X, leading his own band through a set of instrumentals, mostly co-written with drummer Virgil Donati. The album is more prog rock than progressive metal, although the compositional influence of Steve Vai pop up here and there, along with King Crimson and other progressive luminaries given to complex, shifting time signatures. Sherinian has chops to burn, but he plays tastefully and creates textures just as well as he solos; guitarist Brett Garsed and bassist Tony Franklin also turn in fine performances.

Planet X Derek Sherinian

I first heard of Derek Sherinian through Attention Span Radio. Found Planet X on iTunes and ended up downloading the whole album. This is some of the best progressive rock I've ever heard, and I've been listening to prog rock since the early '70s. This music "moves" - has all the qualities of good musicianship for its genre. Well done, first class effort.

I second the first reviewer. I was born in 1972, the early days of progressive music, and no joke from the very cradle I was raised on Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, ELP, Rush, Pink Floyd - all the prog greats... if I had to pick 5 CDs to listen to for the rest of my life this would be one of the first I would grab. And it only gets more enticing in their subsequent recordings! Heavy, heady, melodic, challenging but comprehensible... the mind once expanded by this work will never retract to its original size. Enjoy!

Sherinian grew up in California and studied at the Berklee School of Music, where he perfected his hard rock and fusion chops. He landed touring gigs with Alice Cooper and Kiss in the late '80s/early '90s, and became a full-time member of Dream Theater in September 1994. Sherinian was fired in January 1999, and shortly thereafter hooked...
