Editors’ Notes

Having made his name by helping to break Mary J. Blige in the early Nineties, P. Diddy knows more than a little about what it takes to make a R&B songstress. “I Love You” is a breathy club track with enough hypnotic allure to resemble something by the Neptunes, while “Portrait of Love” is glassy and delirious. “All I Wanna Do” is pleasant, although it isn’t the only track here that feels more like a hot club cut from 2002 than 2008. True to his nature, Diddy recycles the beat from Notorious B.I.G.’s “Sky’s the Limit” for “Dropping Out of Love,” which doesn’t help the feeling that In and Out of Love is short on new ideas. But Dennis is right at home on the piano bounce of “Caught Up” and “Remind You” and while she might not be able to compete with the chic majesty of Rihanna and Ciara, or the soulful pipes of Keyshia Cole, Dennis could easily be this generation’s return to the breathy R&B of Ashanti.

Cheri Dennis-In And Out Of Love

Originally planned to be release last year, after the release of her first single, "I Love You Remix", Cheri changed the album's titled from self titled to In And Out Of My Love. Digitally released Nov. 13th, the store version is scheduled to come out February 26th of 08. I Love You: Street thugsters, Jim Jones and Yung Joc assist Dennis with her debut single. Jones delivers an average performance, as well as Joc, who has a similarly sounding verse. The collab seems really forced, for one thing, Dennis is straight pop, not what I would consider R&B, and she tries to prove her street cred with the guest appearance. Decent single. 3.5/5 Portrait Of Love: Rumored to be the next single, the bass is a little annoying, as Dennis' light tone glides over a drum pattern and synth line. Its a decent cut, but nothing special, as Yung Joc & Gorilla Zoe drop by for mediocre appearances on yet another cut, showing gangstas looking for love in innocent little Dennis. 3.5/5 Remind You: Repetitive piano loops and interjecting synth lines create a truly decent production. Dennis doesn't prove anything here, as her blending seems a little off and the playful trumpets just sound off. Once again, Dennis' vocals aren't that strong and the track seems really pop/R&B aimed, but it is light and dull. 2.5/5 All I Wanna Do: At times her vocals seem a little forced, but she pulls through with a more soulful cut. The assisting production is fitting and allows Dennis a little more soulful warmth. 3/5 Alright: With decent midtempo club feeling production, Dennis' high pitched light singing just gets boring. It doesn't seem to truly have fun, instead light singing that isn't powerful and a wannabe fun rolling club cut, is turned into a dull attempt. 2/5 Dropping Out Of Love: Finally a slower track that fits Dennis much better, her light spacious like singing is soothing and blends much more nicely here. 3.5/5 Pretend: Pop synths and complicated drum patterns consisting of snares, bass and others, create the background to Dennis' singing that sounds much better. Definitely much more energy here. 3.5/5 Spaced Out: Repetitive synths and pumping bass find Dennis with misfitting production. The singing isn't bad, however the production wasn't fitting for the mood. 2.5/5 Act Like You Know: Going for a club hit, the production was very weak here. It is a very disappointing and forced attempt at showing Dennis as tough or hardcore, but when it really comes down to it, she doesn't sound tough and the club beat makes this the worst track of the album. 1.5/5 Showdown: A slow ballad, bubbling effects, high hats and bass backup Dennis, along with light keys. Dennis crooning on this was decent, there have been better love cuts, but for the most part it is enjoyable. 3/5 Ooh Ooh: Piano laced, the hook gets slightly annoying. A decent love record. 3/5 Caught Up: A simple boom clap production with twinkling piano keys, Dennis fits nicely on this decent midtempo. 3.5/5 Waiting: Similar production to "Showdown", it is a decent ender. 3/5 Dennis' debut, In And Out Of Love is definitely that in terms of quality. Her singing isn't the greatest and it is greatly shown in the majority of the cuts, as she is more pop than R&B, lacking that truly soulful singing. Singles, "I Love You" and "Portrait Of Love" are decent enjoyable cuts, that are light fitting Dennis' style, but it is the guest appearances that seem out of place, as Yung Joc, Jim Jones and Gorilla Zoe appear. Their gangsta swaggers and style are misfitting and take away from the singles potential. "Remind You" sadly is one of the weaker tracks, never finding true blend. "All I Wanna Do" and "Dropping Out Of Love" are the stronger cuts of the album, "Dropping Out Of Love" being the stronger of the two. "Showdown" and "Ooh Ooh" are both love tracks that lack rich soulfulness, however attempting to possess it. "Caught Up" and "Waiting" are decent tracks the end the album on a mediocre note, not bad, nor good. Synth heavy "Pretend" and similarly "Spaced Out" were decent cuts. The missteps though, are "Alright" and "Act Like You Know", both suffering club attempts that miss Dennis profile. I know that Diddy and Co. are trying to have Dennis be the next biggest thing, with two light singles to get pop success, some club joints, love cuts, and relationship tracks, but this debut just doesn't cut it. Vocally she isn't that great and seems forced at times, resulting in an album with its moments, but mostly forgettable and not memorable. I guess Diddy released it digitally first to see the response, as opposed to releasing it both in stores and digitally. If she gets another chance, I expect a much more polished and non pop aimed album, that truly fits Dennis style. Rating 6 out of 10

Not bad for a debut

Though Cheri Dennis is a new artist on the rise, her debut album fails to show a lot of originality. But that doesn't mean it's NOT there. This album has a certan vibe to it that makes it stick out...the only problem is that to me, it reminds me of most R&B singers out there. Dennis is no Blige...but who knows what this Diva will achive with Diddy by her side.

Great Debut (First Review)

This is and excellent debut. She has a very bright future. It had already raised my expectations when I heard the free single of the week, Remind You. Here is my track-by-track review: I Love You-The album’s 3rd single. It features Jim Jones and Young Joc. This is a great opening to the album. And I am glad iTunes finally got this song. 5\5 Portrait of Love-it features Young Joc and Gorilla Zoë. And this is kind of the same thing wit Young Joc as in the song I love you. 4\5 Remind You-The album’s 2nd single. And the free single of the week. I really loved this song when it was on the single. A very excellent song for a great bargen. And this song is good to. 5\5 All I wanna do-The beat is cool, but not much of a song in my opinion. 3\5 Alright-This song has a really cool dance beat. Listening to it can make you feel like you are in a club. 5\5 Dropping out of love-Excellent. In this song she sings very good. Love the way her vocals sound. 5\5 Pretend-A nice song. Good lyrics. May not be the best song, but I like it. 3.5\5 Spaced out-Not to say that the usual Cheri Denis isn’t good, but this song has a new Cheri Dennis who I really like. 5\5 Act Like you know-Another un usual song for Cheri Dennis. 5\5 Showdown-Relaxing 4.5\5 Ooh Ooh-A nice beat. Sounds some what Jazzy if you listen to it. 4\5 Caught Up-I kind of like this song. But just not one of the albums best songs. 2.5\5 Waiting-A very nice closing for the album. 4\5 Top 5 Songs: 1)I love you 2)Remind you 3)Alright 4)Spaced Out 5)Act like you know Final thoughts: This is an excellent debut. I think that we will see a lot of Cheri in the future. The first 3 singles are awesome. I love this whole album.

With Sean "Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Records on a winning streak in 2006 (new talents Yung Joc, Cassie, and Danity Kane scored Top Ten hit singles and Top Five albums, not to mention Diddy's own number one album), R&B vocalist Cheri Dennis was next in line, carrying Bad Boy's revival into 2007. The Cleveland native became the label's lone female solo artist since Faith Evans bailed for Capitol Records after her 2001 album, Faithfully. Dennis had to climb up the industry ladder before obtaining any real...
