Editors’ Notes

Tripwires are modern British indie rockers who recall and rejigger elements of '90-style alternative rock until it's difficult, if not impossible, to pick apart their influences. Comparisons to Britpop bands (Oasis, Blur), shoegazers (My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive), psych chameleons (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Radiohead, Primal Scream), and post-punks (Sonic Youth) might be inevitable due to Tripwires' dense and melodic brew. Yet the specifics are fleeting. The sound here, in essence, is that of a '90s cover band that one day decided to write its own songs. This concept works best when Tripwires are at their most cavernous, as the explosive "Love Me Sinister" and the foggy nausea-as-romance of "Catherine, I Feel Sick" make clear. They open up the dynamics for the subtle folk and mellotron-like heaviness of "Paint," where one can imagine what, say, Smashing Pumpkins might have been like with a less abrasive singer. It's all quite fun.
