Album Review

Little Genius, the debut offering by former Mudville frontwoman Marilyn Carino, is a startling, classy, sophisticated set of groove-conscious songs., Rovi

Customer Reviews

An electronically perturbed jazz singer

I loved Marilyn as the lead singer of Mudville, but I prefer these songs - simpler, a much better frame for her howling horn of a voice. She still delivers that great, wrenching prose about sex, longing and denial - its stick-to-your-ribs filling. But the voice gives me shivers.

Love the whole album

Love LIttle GEnius's dark little world. Imagine being in your own little batcave, with giant (faux) leopard fur pillows where everyone's getting a little high and the lighting is perfect. Everyone looks fabulous and sexy and gets along and talks about really fun, interesting and deep subjects.

Put on Little Genius and you're there

A new goddess

When Marilyn Carino sings it sounds like the release of some powerful wordless desire. Not many of our contemporary female singers have this gift and talent and its evident in every song on "LIttle Genius". She just wrings so much genuine emotion out of a vocal, without a speck of falsehood. To me it sounds like bravery, like bold whispers. "Time Bomb" is my favorite song, with the voice careering over the most understated howl of an organ. "Monster Heavy" is also gorgeous, full of dips and swirls, building into a stunning cacophony - her lyrics are nothing short of proclamations, she yearns to be "fearsome deep", she comes "for love alone, faith like the ocean, warm tides waiting" ("Special Dark"). "No Disgrace" is just mindblowing, a sweeping proclamation of joy, her voice is like a horn, free, round, full, soaring. Can't recommend this enough!
