Album Review

Guitarist Martin Cradick's stay with the Baka Pygmy people resulted in songs co-written in Cameroon with the villagers. Others constructed later in London set guitar, violin, and other instruments to rhythmic ideas from the Pygmies, creating a non-derivative style that avoids trying to either duplicate or dilute the songs of the Baka, while still capturing their highly charged lightness of being. "Ngombi," for example, pipes the birdlike call of a forest flute above Cradick's compelling acoustic guitar, while fellow outback alumnus Paddy le Mercier goes for the emotional jugular with a romantic, gypsy-flavored violin. A spirited Baka rhythm ties the instruments together.

If you like music you'll love this

Throwback to my highschool stoner days. My buddies and I spent many afternoons toking it up and jamming to these beats in Hawaii. I had forgotten about Baka Beyond and never would have found them again without ITunes.

Spirit of the Forest - Baka Beyond

This music is great to listen to while cleaning house, etc. Also a great CD for music and movement activities for young children. They love the beat and love to dance and clap to it. GREAT music and GREAT CD!

Soothing and Riveting!

Amazing music! The guitars are truly foot tapping on the song 'The Man Who Danced Too Slowly'..I feel its the kind of music for every mood..there is so much talent which needs to be explored and encouraged in Africa and this album is crafted beautifully to give you a feel of the essence and culture of the people of this continent..Simply superb!

A fusion of Celtic and West African musical traditions, the band represents a collaboration of musicians from northern Europe and West Africa. Cradick and Hart conceived Baka Beyond shortly after the breakup of Outback in 1992. Traveling to the rain forest of Cameroon, the couple lived with Baka pygmies and recorded their music.
