iTunes Review

It's easy to take Willie Nelson for granted. Unlike almost anyone else with a career as long as his, he's never had a"creative comeback" because he's never stopped making beautiful, challenging music on his own terms. In 1996, he quietly released Spirit, a song-cycle as deep and challenging as his career-defining album Red Headed Stranger released twenty years before. With only an acoustic guitar, piano, and fiddle behind him, this is the sound of loneliness stripped down to the raw nerve. The sparse production, beautiful melodies, and Nelson's chocked-back singing can move anyone listening to tears-if they're willing to open themselves up fully to the heartbreak and human truths the album contains.

New Mexico

I bought this record in 99 while I was traveling through New Mexico. This record haunts me. It is so sparse and simple and brillaint. I think this is the best Willie record ever made. I know that is saying alot, but it feels perfect. His voice resonates with brokeness and raw emotion. The guitar work is delicate and fragile. Willie wrote every tune. Everytime I listen to this album I am back in the desert.

Brilliant work

This CD moved me, every note, every word of his voice. Thanks Willie.

Spiritual, Spectral, Timeless

This album was recorded long after Willie Nelson's hitmaking days were over, so it does not contain any of his perennial favorites. Nevertheless, Willie has never made a finer album--remorseful and hopeful and haunting and uplifting, music is seldom this moving. The melodies will steal away in the deepest recesses of your brain and the words, sung in that perfectly aged, inimitable voice, will penetrate your heart. This is THE masterpiece of his storied, much-celebrated career. Beyond essential--this is the album I want to hear from my deathbed.

As a songwriter and a performer, Willie Nelson played a vital role in post-rock & roll country music. Although he didn't become a star until the mid-'70s, Nelson spent the '60s writing songs that became hits for stars like Ray Price ("Night Life"), Patsy Cline ("Crazy"), Faron Young ("Hello Walls"), and Billy Walker ("Funny How Time Slips Away") as well as releasing a series of records on Liberty and RCA that earned him a small but devoted cult following. During the early '70s, Willie aligned himself...
