Album Review

More a technical showcase than a musically worthy enterprise. Jarrett plays 18 instruments, using multi-tracking to strut his stuff.

Flesh in Spirit

This was the first Keith Jarrett I ever bought, back in the late 80s. I bought it for my Mom, thinking it was improvisational piano. She played it once and said "I couldn't turn the stereo off fast enough." I decided to listen to it anyway. I loved it from first hearing. I turned friends onto it. Spirits is nothing like the rest of Jarrett's work, so if you're looking for more of the usual, this may not be your album. This is world music, I suppose. Jarrett plays everything: piano, of course, but also sax, drums, odd pipes from distant places. He chants. In the liner notes, he talks about his exploration of how the silences between sounds were integral to the sound. I suppose that might sound deadeningly obvious to anyone who can read music, but I always thought he meant something more than just the idea that rests are as necessary as quarter notes. When I got my first eMac not long ago and started playing with I-Tunes, I was going through all my records and tapes to see what I wanted to download from I-Tunes. It didn't take long to think of Spirits. But it wasn't available. I was so dissappointed. But I kept checking, and a little over a week ago, there it was. I wrote to one of the friends whom I exposed to Spirits about 20 years ago, told him it was on I-Tunes, and asked him if he still listened to it. He said it was the CD he wore and and replace most often. Good stuff. Mark Stewart

lasting SPIRITS

Took this one cassette when I went to Japan in the late 80's. Seemed as though there was always a quiet time when it sounded so right... late night/early morning, alone or with special company. It died a decade ago and though I never threw it out, I never replaced it. I am so happy it's here, alive and well on iTunes. It's not for everyone, but for some... it's magical.

I don’t think the official reviewer listened to the correct album! This is such simple & beautiful music from start to finish. I’ve been looking for a copy since I lost my original years ago.

Pianist, composer, and bandleader Keith Jarrett is one of the most prolific, innovative, and iconoclastic musicians to emerge from the late 20th century. As a pianist (though that is by no means the only instrument he plays), he literally changed the conversation in jazz by introducing an entirely new aesthetic regarding solo improvisation in concert. Though capable of playing in a wide variety of styles, Jarrett is deeply grounded in the jazz tradition. He has recorded nearly 80 albums as a leader...
