Album Review

Some song or album titles have a way of letting you know exactly what type of music to expect. If a title uses terms like "thugged-out gangsta bitch," "the chronic," or "bling-bling," chances are you can expect hardcore rap. If a title mentions "Jah Rastafari," "ganja," "rude boys," or "natty dread," reggae is probably on the menu. And when a CD has a title like Spiritual Beings on a Human Journey, the logical assumption is that you're getting new age — which is exactly what this album is. Anael has often been compared to fellow new age vocalist Enya — and, to be sure, there are some parallels. Both favor a tranquil, peaceful approach, both are known for spiritual lyrics, and both are female vocalists in a genre that is dominated by instrumentalists. But Enya, for all her tranquility, has more of an edge than Anael — and Quebec native Anael isn't as Celtic-influenced as Ireland's Enya. Some of Anael's more ardent supporters in the new age press have gone so far as to say that she is a better, stronger vocalist than Enya; this journalist disagrees with that opinion, although Spiritual Beings on a Human Journey points to the fact that Anael is a talented, likable singer in her own right. Although Anael occasionally sings in French and even Hebrew, most of the lyrics are in English; whatever the language, a lush, serene, ethereal atmosphere prevails on these 2001 and 2002 recordings. Anael tends to be predictable; after a few selections, the listener pretty much knows what the rest of this 58-minute CD will sound like. Nonetheless, the atmosphere that she provides is an appealing one, and those who are mainly interested in a tranquil ambience will find this album to be a pleasing, if limited, experience.

Spiritual Beings on a Human Journey

The album itself is a journey – describing that one upon which the spiritual seeker embarks when they’ve decided to follow their chosen path. From the first glimpses of the highest human vision to the culmination of its meaning and purpose, this beautifully and powerfully crafted music takes you on a journey straight through the very heart of Mankind’s potential to the beginnings of its ultimate realization. Decidedly ethereal, definitely angelic, Anael breathes an almost hypnotically lovely and melodic breath of hope and inspiration that reaches deep into the psyche and soul of the listener, delivering a gentle reminder of the simple things that support the creation of a spiritual life full of joy and mutual service for the world. Though Anael is sometimes compared to Enya, there is no comparison. They are two entirely different sounds, with two entirely different messages to deliver - however compatible the two may be. Anael’s sound is entirely her own, delivered with pure honesty, passion for her cause, and love for her listeners as well as her Creator. Rather than feeling the artist is bound to a certain sound and predictable, it is easily recognized that this album is themed (as are they all) and the individual songs are separate threads woven throughout one master-crafted tapestry. This listener definitely recommends “Sky Sent (Disclosure)” for the new listener to Anael. It is the epitome and culmination of not only this particular album, but also of her and partner Bradfield’s entire message and theme throughout all their joint musical projects – that of uplifting the human spirit to that more refined state of being, all the better to achieve its true potentials. One of two songs donated for the Fire the Grid project, the two combined have seen over 12 million downloads from the site. A subsequent album, “Light & Love”, was later produced in 2007 for the benefit of the same meditation event. This is not just music you hear. This is music you feel. It is a tangible energetic spiral that carries you upward and outward upon a wave of soul-soothing sounds and spiritually expanding ideals and deposits you gently on the shore of remembrance and personal action and interaction.

One of the most powerful albums I've ever heard!

and Sky Sent is the most powerful SONG I've ever heard. The lyrics and soothing melodies lift you to another dimension where there is nothing but beauty, peace, and light. Highly recommended!

Although French Canadian vocalist Anael has a lushly orchestrated sound that's obviously indebted to Enya, she isn't nearly as influenced by Celtic folk, preferring to draw inspiration (and, occasionally, repertory) from classical, choral, and liturgical music, as well as jazz, pop, and new age. Still, most of her material is penned in the present day by her collaborator Bradfield, who generally handles composition, arrangements, instruments, and production on her recordings.
