iTunes Review

Whether solo or with Black Uhuru, velvet-voiced Don Carlos never confined himself to one groove. He's a lover on "Jamaican Woman" and a Rastafarian prophet on "Rivers of Babylon," a funkier cover of the Melodians' classic. There's politics on "Johnny Big Mouth," pure fun on "My Brethren Party," and a bit of both on the title song—which promises to rid the world of evil with, you guessed it, a laser beam. Carlos is equally charismatic on a love song or a fist-waver.

Crucial roots

This entire album is a must have for serious roots fans. "lazer beam" and "spread out" are classics. But the bonus cuts are "natty dread have him credentials" and "come in girl" from Don Carlos' partnership with Gold. Don Carlos is a reggae heavyweight !!

A definate must buy!

I grew up listening to reggae music naturally because my parents are from the Caribbean. In the 80's my uncle from Boston moved in with us when we lived in The Bronx. I can remember my uncle coming back from Moodies Records up the block with two new albums. Lazer Beam was one and Natty Dread Have Him Credential was the other. If I'm not mistaken, both albums had Don Carlos and Gold as the artist. What you're buying here on iTunes is a combination of both of those albums which is by far a must have for any true roots reggae fan. In the early 90's I purchased the same two albums on wax and recorded it to a CD quality cassette tape. I couldn't find the albums or the cassette tape, so I was searching high and low online for my beloved Don Carlos and Gold to no avail. Fast forward to today and iTunes now has this album to purchase. I'd snatch it up quick, fast and hurry before it disappears forever!

Sweet-voiced vocalist and composer Don Carlos (born: Euvin Spencer) has had his greatest success singing with Black Uhuru, the reggae trio he formed in 1974 with two friends -- Rudolph Dennis and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson -- from the "Waterhouse" district in Kingston. Carlos recorded only one single with the group, leaving to pursue a solo career and to perform with a band, Don Carlos and Gold. Sixteen years later he returned and joined with Dennis and Simpson to resurrect the original trio. Their...
