Album Review

Tower of Power followed their self-titled gold album with an even better album that didn't enjoy similar sales success. Back to Oakland had tougher, funkier and better-produced cuts, stronger vocals from Lenny Williams (who was more comfortable as their lead singer), and included an excellent ballad in "Time Will Tell," and a rousing tempo in "Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream)." The Tower of Power horn section reaffirmed its reputation in both soul and pop circles, and the album included a powerhouse instrumental.

Back To Oakland

Being an avid TOP fan since 1972! I believe this was the best core group that rocketed Tower to their status of today! Adding Chester Thompson on the Hammond B3 organ and Bruce Conte from the group the Loading Zone along with Lenny Pickett from the same group. Tower now had the ability to play any music with soulful powerful ease!

The Top Album of TOP

Sometimes, I've had to pull my car over when I hear Squib Cakes. The interplay between Chester and the horns causes a sudden joyful spell to come over me and I can't quit bobbing my head, shaking my behind, and attempting to stomp my left foot through the floorboards.

Best jam ever.

SQUIB CAKES!!! Period. End of story.
