Everything I Expected, and More

Firstly I would like to state that I am not reviewing Bach's Mattaus Passion. I am reviewing the quality of the recording and the performers, as well as the quality of the iTunes download. Along those guidelines, I would like to say that this is the best recording of BWV 244 I have listened to. I have also studied this piece extensively, and it is very accurately interpreted. I cannot argue the sound for its intended original sound, so if you are looking for that you would be best to look at the Bach Collegium Japan. However, the chorus is phenomenal. The powerful bassist captures the emotion of the burial of Jesus in the heart of the individual in the aria no.65, and final chorus is powerful. Simply amazing. In terms of the iTunes download, my biggest problem is the quality of the bitrate. Not much can be done about that though, so if you're looking for CD quality, don't think you'll get it here. That being said, if you need it immediately and don't mind the sound quality too much, this is for you. In response to a previous review, please understand that what you see is what you get. If you are too lazy to reorganize something like this according to your needs, then boo hoo for you. That is not the fault of the record company, and it should be noted that it would be hard to find this for under $10 with shipping and handling anyways, so if 30 minutes of your free time is not worth the money saved, then learn to research what you are purchasing before you buy it.

What's missing?

Although the quality and the singing are fine, this recording omits the chorales. Does Solti think this is just theater. This is Bach expressing his deepest faith and belief, and the chorales are where he brings we the people into the passion. To omit them is a crime and you should definitely know about it before buying this presentation

Completely orgiastic notation

No qualms with Bach, Solti, or the Chicago Symphony Chorus. But do forgive my desire as a "purist" to wish to listen to this piece in the order it was intended to be heard, and NOT parse it randomly as it is ordered after my download. Very frustrated right now. There seems to be no way to order this recording correctly simply by selecting (i.e. double-clicking) the default organizing categorys (columns) in iTunes. And lazy me, I do not want to waste thrity minutes of my life ordering this because the Incompetents at Decca Music didn't have the fore-sight to imagine how this might play back. They're making even "W" look good right now!

Genre: Classical

The Chicago Symphony Chorus is among the best choruses attached to a world-class symphony orchestra. It was established in 1957, when the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Fritz Reiner, engaged Margaret Hillis to develop a permanent chorus of a quality fit to partner the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at its concerts. Hillis already had a record of achievement: she was a junior golf champion and a civilian flying instructor for the U.S. Navy during World War II. She studied music at Indiana...
