Album Review

Combining the aesthetics of power pop, grunge, and hard rock, Los Angeles' Arlo has spawned a big album with big hooks, big harmonies, and an even bigger guitar attack that should endear them to the vast American teenage wasteland. Classic rock influences abound, especially when the band barely stops short of cobbling the all-too-familiar octave riff of the Knack's seminal new wave anthem "My Sharona" in "Runaround." Cuts such as "Culture," "Little American," and "Working Title" all explode with the most unflappable characteristics of modern rock radio currency, namely adolescent angst meshed with raging hormones and wandering spirits. The odd time signature in title track underpins a tale of despair that belies the infectious singalong chorus. Stab the Unstoppable Hero is an enjoyable and youthful romp that proves the kids are all right after all.

WOW!!! This band rocks. Thank god i bought the album!

Amazing, high-adrenaline pop-rock with an amzing edge. I wish I wouldve heard of them earlier. The music always keeps my head nodding back and forth, between the dramatic and aggresive sounds. Awesome album! Thanks Arlo

I'll give this a turkey, a/k/a three strikes in a row, since I happened upon these dudes at a former bowling alley turned club way outside LA some random night where they blew my mind for the first time. Seeing them live, 'runaround' hit everyone right away, but this cd is so much more, a solid, solid album, close to a classic. Certainly a personal favorite for me...

Timeless power pop

This is one of those hidden gems. Not a bad track on this record. So sad they have gone their separate ways.

Formed: 1995 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Quirky indie-rockers Arlo began life in the mid-'90s, when L.A. guitarists/vocalists Nate Greely and Sean Spillane formed a band called Otto while in college. A revolving-door rhythm section didn't stop the band from releasing a split single on the Glimmerfed label; they finally settled on bassist Shmedley and drummer Soup, both formerly of the local outfit Holliston Stops. A name change to Arlo followed shortly thereafter (in honor of their favorite club soundman), and the band signed to Sub Pop...
