Expanding past the bounds

You may notice that a few of the songs on here are a bit over the top in terms of Melvin-ness. This is simply due to Atlantic records hazing them and making them act like puppets.

One song on the following album, "honky" features telephone recordings of some of the people at Atlantic that outline what the extent of this hazing was. The melvins were becoming more angry with their situation, so they started to push the boundaries.

Songs like "goggles", "soup", and "hide" show the melvins trying to see what they can get away with, while jams like "the bit", "tipping the lion" and "the bloat" are more familiar and quite awesome.

This album is quirky and confusing. A very soft tune, "black bock", will very quickly cut to "goggles", which is intentionally amplified to the point of severe clipping to jar the listener. Relief from "goggles" is bittersweet when "soup" cuts in with some very high pitched keyboards.

This album contains a few oddballs, but it's still the perfect amount of sludge that we've come to expect from the melvins. These guys can flay my brain all they want.

The Melvins' first record was released in 1987; they've released many albums since then, but it wasn't until 1993 that they went to a major label, thanks to their protégé, Kurt Cobain. While some may find the Melvins dull and repetitious,...
