Stale Scotch and Cheap Cigars

How refreshing it is to hear an award winning songwriter finally turn the microphone onto himself in a raw and sincere demonstration of talent. Swann's Stale Scotch and Cheap Cigars gives us a rare glimpse at the man behind many hit songs. Recorded live without the over processed sound of today's talents, Swann shows why he is an outstanding songwriter with a gift of delivering the depth of our feelings to us. Bravo Phil Swann for finally reflecting the spotlight on you - and thanks for sharing your soul with us!

On Cheap Scotch ....

I really enjoyed "Stale Scotch and Cheap Cigars." First, I like records that are not overly produced and busy. The sparse instrumentation allows the songs to be showcased on their own catchy lyrics and melodies. The CD's opening song, "Slow Dance," sets the stage musically for what's to come. You can easily place yourself in some smoky, dive jazz club somewhere with the first piano keys hit. Music is about "feel", and this CD has it.

Overall, I loved the feel and sound of this recording. If you're a jazz lover you'll want to put this CD in your collection — whether you like stale scotch and cheap cigars, or not!

This isn't "safe jazz"

I'm a member of Generation Y so i guess i should be listening to some auto-tuned crap, but i'd rather listen to great songs
and great musicians. And I really enjoy it when the artist is both. That why Phil Swann is great. His lyrics are clever but street-wise too, and he doesn't bore me, until my eyes glaze over like other "safe jazz" artists. He takes risks and he know the craft of song writing. The soloist on this record cook too. I'm not a fan of most "jazz flutist", whoever did these cuts rules. Might have to change my mind about the flute. Great record, enough out of me.
