iTunes Review

Sigur Rós' breakthrough second album literally makes no sense: Frontman Jónsi Birgisson sings in a made-up language called "Hopelandish," over songs that have little precedent in modern rock. Yet it’s absolutely gorgeous. Inspired by the beauty of the band's native Iceland, as well as fellow post-rockers like Mogwai, the music is both expansive and serene. Is that a sonar ping on "Svefn-G-Englar"? Is a whole town singing on "Olsen Olsen"? Words fail Ágætis Byrjun—and that's exactly the point.

The soundtrack for those on the peaks of the highest mountains and those below the deepest deapths of the ocean. Every track brings forth its own unique sense of awe.

By far a contender for my alltime favorite album.

I starting listening to this album alot at the beginning of this past June, and I went on vacation in Montana shortly after that. I'll tell you this... Sigur Ros' beautiful music is an amazing soundtrack to driving through the mountains and glaciers. There couldn't have been more perfect music for that vacation than this album. I love Sigur Ros so much.

Formed in early 1994 while the members were teenagers, the trio's first recorded song earned them a deal with Iceland's Bad Taste label. Their sprawling debut LP, Von (Hope), was released in 1997, followed the next year by a collection of remixes from that...
