Mike Cottone-The Future of Jazz

Julliard trained trumpeter, Mike Cottone, hits the ground running with his debut album "Just Remember". Cottone, who gigs regularly at several East Coast locales, most notably, Bar Basque most Tuesday nights, has a sound that seems about as new as it gets, while still echoing masters such as Davis, Baker et al. This disc contains Cottone's own compositions and some excessively sublime covers. Both hit extreme levels ranging from rhythmic excitement to deep feeling.

Cottone's sound is one of clean perfection. His notes are crystal clear and when he riffs, he really cooks! His covers of "When Sunny Get's Blue" and Stardust are phenomenal in their unique interpretations, while expertly holding on to the root of the song.

The title of this disc, and the title song, "Just Remember" truly evoke what Cottone's music is all about. He is a genius artist who with his exceptional skills on the trumpet, bring to mind the jazz's golden age, even in his own compositions. While listening, you can almost imagine the smoke filled rooms of jazz joints in the 40's and 50's.

If you are a jazz fan, this is an absolute must have for your collection! Remember the name, you'll be hearing it a lot in the future!

Trumpet Is Tenderly Soulful!!!!!

When I think of what modern jazz should be in 2011, I think of Mike Cottone. Not only does Cottone possess the great qualities of a bebop player, he also plays every solo like the way Stevie Wonder sings an R&B song. In other words, Mike has more vocabulary than Merriam Webster, but maturely uses that vocabulary to make each solo the most lyrical masterpiece one has ever laid ears upon. (And it's REALLY hard to be lyrical on Giant Steps changes!) You can tell by listening that Mr. Cottone draws on other genres besides jazz to influence his musicianship. This is one factor separates Just Remember from 90% of the other jazz albums being produced. This album is suitable for fans of Coltrane, Miles, Freddie Hubbard, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, The Roots, and an array of many other artists. Aside from Mike's virtuosic technique, wonderful improvising, and beautiful timbre, this album showcases his skills as a composer. His writing takes the listener on a journey that shows the broad spectrum of grooves and styles that have shaped jazz in the past 100 years. No matter what the style or groove of the tune, and even though Mike is quite capable of playing every chord substitution known to man, his bluesy approach gives him a soulful quality that is lacking in many jazz players these days. I sincerely recommend this album if you're into an intense study of jazz or if you're looking for the perfect background music for your upscale, black-tie cocktail party. I will keep putting Just Remember on repeat while I anxiously await Mike Cottone's next release.

The Future of Jazz

Mike Cottone has already achieved much in his young career having obtained degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Juiliard. He now is off to study at the prestigious Monk Institute with the likes of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. He is one of the rising stars of jazz and his album debut is superb. Consisting of mostly originals written by Cottone himself and a few traditional standards no tune disappoints. This one album to get and a musicians to start paying attention to as he is going to be a star in the genre for years to come.
