The return of reggae napoletano

Gennaro della Volpe, better known as Raiz (he's also gone by Rais, Raiss, and Rino). formerly the lead singer of the great Neapolitan band Almamegretta, returns with his second album since leaving the band. On Uno, produced by Bill Laswell, he leaves behind the pop ecelecticism of his previous album, "WOP," to concentrate on the sound that made him famous: dub, reggae, and rap with a strong Neapolitan and Mediterranean flavor. The grooves are deep and often "sticky," as Jamaicans say, and Raiz's vocals are consistently soulful and passionate. The album is sure to please fans who found "WOP" too poppy and commercial. Raiz even includes some straight-up tammurriata, a type of Neapolitan folk song/chant using voice and percussion. There also is Brazilian percussion and Arabic melody, but overall Raiz' characteristic blend of dub/reggae and Neapolitan melody and language dominates. The only misfire is "Jerusalem," with its naive, cringe-worthy English lyrics, but if you can tune out the dopey "spirituality," the tune's reggae groove is captivating.
