Album Review

Eleven official live albums in one discography is an awful lot, but Dave Matthews manages to throw a few surprises in on 2010’s Live in New York City. A double-album capturing their second night at their July 2010 stint at Citi Field, this finds DMB downplaying their big hits — the biggest here is the ballad “Crash into Me” — in favor of moody selections from deep in his catalog, including songs from Matthews’ 2003 solo album Some Devil. This lends the performance a meditative quality unusual for such a large setting — even the extended numbers (five songs clock in over ten minutes, two of them over 15) don’t dig deep so much as float, the improvisations relying on texture instead of groove. It’s a subtle difference, one that matters only to the dedicated, but it does mean that Live in New York City winds up with a different flavor than its ten predecessors.

Customer Reviews

For Dave fans, it's fantastic.

You know, I see these other reviews saying "oh, these are the same songs off every other live record". Well, that's true. But the beauty of the DMB is that even if they recorded the same song 10,000 times in a live setting, true fans could pick out the nuances of each performance. This cd reintroduces a lot of older material versus the Whiskey-heavy live cd's that came out of Europe in 2009. Sound and performance wise, I couldn't be more satisfied. Is it the same songs? Yes, but for a band that built their career on touring, it's all anyone could ask for.

Never Ceases to Amaze!

I attended both the Citi Field Concerts (7/16 & 7/17) - this is the 7/17 one. Both shows were AMAZING!! About halfway through the first night I turned to my buddies and called it...I said they'll release one of the shows becasue it was just that good...(I even called the name!) This is such a treat to have released so those who were there can relive the night, AND so those who couldn't make it can get a taste of this "better-than-usual" concert. It combines old classics with new favorites for one H*** of an album. Any Dave fan will love it! Dave really mixes it up on this album with a 17 minute version of "Seek Up" and the previosuly unreleased Time Bomb intro to "Two Step." Get it now - you won't be disappointed!!!

Great as Always!

:) Just Awesome! Again!

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians -- bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar -- and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth...
