iTunes Review

Austin, Texas’ Voxtrot have built up a loyal following with a strategic regimen of notable live performances (playing well-attended industry showcases from SXSW in Austin to the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago and opening for the Shins at the NME Awards in London), internet savvy, word-of-mouth praise, magazine kudos, a limited recorded output (only two hard to find 7 inch singles and three EPs before this debut album) and a smart attempt at reigning in the quality control. The group recorded their debut album with Australian producer Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey) and immediately seized on the upgrade in sound to make a lush, dramatic album underscored by strings, strongly present keyboards (“Easy”) and beats that bridge the group’s thornier punk roots with their passion for ‘80s-styled new wave dancefloor neurotics. Though they begin with a gentle send-off (“Introduction”), the quintet presses the accelerator where they settle for a good cruising position (“Steven,” “Firecracker,” “Brother in Conflict”).

may require multiple listenings

I was disappointed after my first listening to the album. After their series of absolutely, and immediately, stunning EPs, I assumed that the LP would be more of the same instead of what I interpreted as a rather standard collection of indie dance pop songs. The s/t album, however, really needs to be considered and listened to independently of the EPs. Whereas the individual tracks on the ‘Wolves,’ ‘Mothers,’ and ‘Fans’ EPs are quite readily distinctive and can immediately be associated with its respective record, the LP is much more diverse in approach, scope, and stylings. That is, in comparison to the EPs, which appeared in nice, tight little packages, the LP may seem sprawling and unfocused upon initial listening. As a big fan of the EPs, I forced myself to listen to the LP multiple times. It seems rather easy to develop a personal connection to Voxtrot’s music, as I did with the EPs, and I felt I owed it to the band to ‘listen harder’ to the album. It was only after multiple listenings that I personally was able to appreciate the tremendous beauty of the album. What initially seemed sprawling and unfocused became wide ranging and dynamic. Different, but disappointing gave way to just being different. I am absolutely captivated by the album now, and I feel as though I earned the right to be so enthralled (although clearly, it is Voxtrot’s art and they did all the heavy lifting.) Other reviewers have stated that the full-length has a fuller sound, and I am inclined to agree. Voxtrot has always had a very mature sound. I think the album, as a whole, continues this pattern, but is furthered as well by a sense of comfortableness with their sound and direction. My favorite tracks on the album are ‘Firecracker,’ and ‘Easy.’ Vinyl version includes coupon code for digital download. iTunes includes 2 bonus tracks (‘Loan Shark,’ and ‘New Love’) not on the proper album, which may also be purchased individually.

Amazing Debut LP!

Voxtrot will blow up, it's just a matter of time. After releasing a couple of fantastic EPs they finally did it, and it's no dissapointment. Make sure to listen through this album several times before deciding your opinion on it, as a lot of it will take some time to soak in. Highlights are in my opinion, "Introduction, Ghost, Steven, The Future Pt. 1, Every Day. Love this LP.

I waited so long for them to finally release an LP and it was worth it. Voxtrot is amazing and should be appriceated as the musical second coming of christ!

Formed: Austin, TX

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Although they hail from Texas, Voxtrot's animated indie pop easily receives comparisons to Belle & Sebastian and similar European groups. In between studying in Scotland, frontman Ramesh Srivastava founded the project and soon decided to pursue the band full-time in Austin, TX, being joined by Jared Van Fleet (guitar/keyboard), Matt Simon (drums), Mitch Calvert (guitar), and Jason Chronis (bass). Garnering considerable buzz from bloggers as well as high-profile magazines before even releasing a full-length,...
