Album Review

After more than 20 years in the music business, Tony! Toni! Toné! founder Raphael Saadiq has gotten around to offering his solo debut, Instant Vintage. The apropos title reflects the old-school style that Saadiq has adopted for the album. However, he dubs the type of music — a mix of samples, soul, gospel, and R&B — "gospedelic." Saadiq has called upon some of neo-soul's most popular artists to help out on Instant Vintage. Angie Stone makes an appearance on the opening dancefloor-worthy track, "Doing What I Can," which briefly tells the story of Saadiq's career. D'Angelo lends a hand on the funkified "Be Here." Traces of 3T seep into Instant Vintage. Lush orchestration, hook-laden, danceable melodies, and gospel influences are evident throughout the recording. This album should be renamed "Instant Classic."

Sincere Classic

I purchased this CD when it first came out back in 2002... and to this day it remains in heavy rotation... Saadiq has always displayed his talents from back in the 3T days, but on this album he truly sets himself apart from his bandmates as a true "neo" artiste!!! Each song is dynamic, and worth listening to. There isn't one song on here that I skip or fast forward thru. Love it, LOve it, LOVe it... LOVE it!!! If you are a person who can appreciate real soul music without the artificial crap, then this purchase is well worth the it!!!

A truely underappreciated musician

If the 30 second clips are leaving you on the fence about this album, get it! There is so much more to these beautiful tracks than 30 seconds can justly capture. Whenever you find an artist with a unique vision and sound PLUS the courage to use it, this is a very special thing. Very refreshing among some very other repetitive and bland neo-soul out there. Even at six years old this album still and will always sound fresh.

I love it!

The best albums are both polished and raw, and this one is no exception. Each track is beautifully produced with lush orchestrations and arrangements, but the themes in the lyrics are so real. Saadiq's voice is strong and distinct and the lyrics are good. The album does contain "vintage" elements, but Saadiq invokes the spirit of his influences without completely biting their styles (Like so many other "Neo Soul" artists do). This is a great album!
