Brilliant!

As usual with Trent Reznor and NIN, this album is hauntingly brilliant. Art at its finest!

Basically Beautiful

With several older songs remade- stripped down to mostly Trent's voice and keyboard/piano- and new songs that focus on a spare instrumental approach, this collection shows quite clearly how fine a composer Trent is. Even when they are barely there, the songs are just completely anchored in the simple beauty of well written passages, and focused, emotionally connected vocal counterpoint. Here, I feel Trent taking joy in the beauty of simplicity.
And being able to hear his voice so clearly shows how well he sings. Maybe not the best voice in the world, but he never fudges his notes. He is invested; he makes the music and the voice connect.
What is on display here is the reason I have listened to NIN all these years. It's the beautiful core that is present in all his music. It may be layered with hard, clashing, dissonant sounds much of the time but it is always beautiful.

Great Acoustic

Love the acoustic version of "the day the world went away". It was featured in the TV show Person Of interest. Going to miss Howard and the crew when CBS takes it off the air.
